On the whole, our psalm is highly reminiscent of Psalm 1 with its sharp contrast between the righteous person\u2019s embrace of goodness and the evildoers\u2019 adoption of wickedness. One such example of the avoidance of evil reads: <\/span>\u201c<\/span>He who slanders his friend in secret I will destroy; I cannot endure the haughty and proud man\u201d (5). The Hebrew text, however, is somewhat opaque.<\/span><\/p>\n

The original of \u201cHe who slanders\u201d is <\/span>m\u2019loshni<\/span><\/em>, which appears to be a participle fashioned from the noun <\/span>lashon<\/span><\/em> literally meaning tongue and figuratively meaning language. The nearest similar word in Hebrew would be <\/span>malshin<\/span><\/em>, an informer (as in the Amidah blessing of the same name), the denominator common to the two being the pejorative notion of tongue \u201cwagging\u201d\u2014as opposed to the ordinary sense of speaking.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ibn Ezra, after dismissing the extra <\/span>yod<\/span><\/em> at its end as a superfluous flourish, commented: \u201c<\/span>M\u2019loshni<\/span><\/em> is an adjective. It is like a slanderer.\u201d Radak, providing some greater philological detail, wrote: \u201cThe word is a quadriliteral verb [i.e., one with four root letters, rather than the usual three], <\/span>m-l-sh-n<\/span><\/em>, meaning one who reports secretly on another\u2019s activities in order to convict him according to royal ruling.\u201d (In his own biblical dictionary, <\/span>Sefer HaShorashim<\/span><\/em>, Radak listed our word under the triliteral verb <\/span>l-sh-n<\/span><\/em>, remarking that it belongs to the <\/span>po`el<\/span><\/em> conjugation that resembles a quadriliteral.)<\/span><\/p>\n
