{"id":88105,"date":"2021-01-31T17:28:24","date_gmt":"2021-01-31T15:28:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=88105"},"modified":"2021-01-31T17:28:24","modified_gmt":"2021-01-31T15:28:24","slug":"belonging-to-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/belonging-to-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Belonging to God"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"88105","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":62571,"related_cahpter":"667","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"The implications of not having made ourselves\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 100, despite its brevity (only five verses in all) contains a very upbeat message, encouraging everyone to act joyfully and share divine praises in God\u2019s presence, which, for all intents and purposes, is everywhere and at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The positive quality of its contents makes eminently understandable why this psalm is included in the section of the weekday morning prayers, known as \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pesukei D\u2019Zimra<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (verses of song.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our attention is drawn to a unique aspect of the middle verse of the five: \u201cAcknowledge that the LORD is God; He made us and we are His, His people, the flock He tends.\u201dThe original Hebrew of verse 3, contains a \u201cKtiv\u201d and \u201cKeri,\u201d i.e., the text is written one way, while the reading of the text suggests a different meaning altogether. The English translation reflects the \u201cKeri\u201d: \u201cve-lo\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lamed vav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) lit. \u201cand to Him,\u201d i.e., we belong \u201cto Him\u201d&#8211; we are His. This reading corresponds very well with the end of the verse \u201cHis people, the flock He tends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cKetiv\u201d is \u201cve-lo&#8217;\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lamed alef<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) lit. \u201cand not\u201d, a negative article, i.e., &#8220;(we did) not (make ourselves).&#8221; While the end of the verse, according to this meaning, does not correspond with such a sentiment, the phrase immediately preceding it, does\u2014\u201cHe made us,\u201d we did not create ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What might \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lamed vav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lamed alef<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d suggest, were we to posit, like other examples of \u201cKtiv\u201d and \u201cKeri\u201d in the Bible (see e.g., Isaiah 63:9) that both meanings are significant?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra cites R. Saadia Gaon\u2019s interpretation of the duality of \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ve-lo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026And the word is like all \u201cKeri\u201d and \u201cKetiv\u201d; therefore the Gaon said: \u201cand we are His\u201d is the opposite of \u201c\u2026And I made myself\u201d (Ezekiel 29:3). Egypt\u2019s Pharaoh, who impressed his subjects by claiming that he was a god, and his having willed himself into existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acknowledging that we are someone else\u2019s creation, defines us as \u201cbelonging\u201d to Him, and requires us to demonstrate fealty and acquiescence to His will.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","image":{"ID":88106,"id":88106,"title":"ps100-self made
