Psalm 96 concludes, very similarly, with \u201cAt the presence of the LORD, for He is coming, for He is coming to rule the earth; He will rule the world justly, and its peoples in faithfulness (\u2018<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emunato<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u201d (96:13). Two obvious questions present themselves: Why does the earlier verse repeat \u201cHe is coming\u201d while the latter verse does not, and what is the difference between judging people with equity and judging them with faithfulness?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should not surprise us by now that the exegete most likely to address these questions was Malbim, who rejected the proposition (favored by Ibn Ezra and Radak) that repetition is merely a rhetorical flourish with no substantive meaning. Instead, Malbim insisted on distinguishing between even ostensible synonyms. He commented here (v.8-9):<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rivers shall applaud: [Natural] differences will appear among rivers and mountains just as there had been among the Jordan and the streams of Arnon. This will occur \u201cAt the presence of the LORD, for He is coming to rule the earth.\u201d Here he said \u201cHe is coming\u201d [only] once because He will come without an intermediary, which is why he [also] said \u201cHe will rule the world justly, and its peoples with equity\u201d rather than \u201cwith faithfulness,\u201d which indicates a natural order; rather [He will come] according to the [supernatural] direct order. [The literal meaning of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meisharim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is directness.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is consistent with Malbim\u2019s ongoing exegetical endeavor to distinguish between God\u2019s natural and general providence that He extends to all mankind, and His immediate, particular providence that He metes out to Israel alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking a more general perspective on the conclusion of our psalm, we should note that Rashi, Ibn Ezra, and Radak differ somewhat on its interpretation. Of the rivers\u2019 applause, Rashi wrote: \u201cThe prophets used catchy phrases; the rivers have no hands to clap, it is only an expression of joy and elation.\u201d Ibn Ezra, however, wrote: \u201cIt means that people traveling the sea and rivers and mountains will rejoice,\u201d and Radak wrote, simply, \u201cThe [entire] verse is
