Aharon Harlap (b. 1941), Psalm 98 from \u201cMima\u2019amakim\u201d (\u201cFrom Out Of The Depths\u201d), for soprano and orchestra<\/span><\/p>\n

The composer and conductor Aharon Harlap is one of the most important and appreciated musical creators in Israel. Born in Canada, educated at some of the finest institutions in Europe before moving to Israel in 1963, he became part of the artistic world in Israel, as well as the academic-pedagogical arenas. He was a conductor of a number of excellent choirs over the many years of his career, and this activity is felt in his vocal composition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Harlap\u2019s work was largely traditional-tonal, and one can sense his mastery of a range of styles: classical, jazz, late Romantic, French impressionism, and other techniques of the 20th century. Surpassing all else was his impressive exactitude in the details of composition, which created the impression of classical music at its best.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All these and more can be seen in the clip here, which is the fifth and last movement from a larger composition for soprano soloist and orchestra, which is devoted to psalms. The opening psalm is !30 (<\/span>mima\u2019amakim – <\/span><\/i>\u201cfrom out of the depths\u201d), which also gave its name to the work. The pain-filled melody \u201cfrom out of the depths\u201d opens this movement, played first by the orchestra. Then suddenly we are thrown into the boundless joy of Ps 98, and the ecstatic singing of the soprano. Harlap expertly utilizes a system of tones and keys that highlight the defiant nature of the music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The text is in the Hebrew original, and we are invited to follow the very direct interpretation that the composer gives to the words in the musical setting.\u00a0<\/p>\n
