Psalm 98:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nMoses–the leader of the Israelites and receiver of the Torah at Sinai, a shepherd chosen by God for his humility and loyalty to his sheep. The penultimate verse of the Torah describes him as the greatest prophet of all time.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nMoses wrote this psalm prophetically about the great joy that Israel will experience after the coming of the Messiah.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Enthronement–This psalm extols God\u2019s royal role in the universe.
\nPsalm of Praise–This is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nContinuing the theme of the previous psalm, Moses, through beautiful imagery alludes to the messianic era. Of interesting note is that both their opening and closing verses are quite similar. The singer composed this as a song for that future time, when we will have witnessed God\u2019s performing many miraculous deeds for our sake.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of nine verses, subdivided into three parts.
\nIn verses 1-3, the psalmist begins with a command to the congregation to sing a new song to God for His marvels and victories He has bestowed upon Israel. He further beautifully describes the manifestation of God\u2019s salvation.
\nIn verses 4-6, he calls upon all the inhabitants of the earth to make joyful music in honor of God and to crown Him as King.
\nIn verses 7-9, he addresses the forces of nature: the sea, land, rivers and mountains to sing praises in honor of God\u2019s arrival as judge of the earth.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nTo make peace between two parties–Verse 8 states: \u201cRivers will clap hands, together, mountains will sing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nRecited as the fourth paragraph of Kabbalat Shabbat (Friday night service).
\nVerse 6 is found in the Mussaf Amidah (Silent Meditation) of Rosh HaShanah.<\/p>\n
