This reference to islands shows up a few times in Tanach, mostly in the latter prophets. Usually the use of this word &#8220;islands&#8221; refers to far-off lands beyond the local nucleus of the land of Israel and its immediate surrounding lands.\u00a0 The land of Israel has a coast, but many surrounding nations are landlocked. Even those areas that are accessible through rivers and streams are not islands, e.g. Mesopotamia, Persia, the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt, and Syria. For example in Isaiah 11:11 many of these areas are listed followed by a general reference to the islands:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;And it shall come to pass in that day, That the Lord will set His hand again the second time To recover the remnant of His people, That shall remain from Assyria, and from Egypt, And from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, And from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in Esther, in 10:1, the Persian king levies a tax on &#8220;the mainland and the islands.&#8221;\u00a0 It is possible these islands specifically refer to Cyprus, although because the word appears in plural- it may refer specifically to a group of Islands. It may, therefore, refer to Greece- the closest nation that is made up of multiple islands. It would make sense then that these nations that are accessible mostly by boat would be symbolic of faraway
