In this debate, an oft cited talmudic source maintains that God forbade the ministering angels from reciting His praise at the splitting of the Red Sea, chastising them with \u201cMy handmade creatures are drowning in the sea and you would sing praises?\u201d (Megillah 10b). Another relevant talmudic source (B\u2019rakhot 10a) reports that when Rabbi Meir was harassed by hooligans and prayed that they should die, his wife, Bruriah, chastened him by pointing out that the verse calls for the eradication of \u201csins\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chata\u2019im<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), not sinners (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chot\u2019im<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; Ps. 104:35).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet another source is a mishnah addressing potential witnesses in a murder case\u00a0 that stipulates:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, should everyone declare \u201cThe world was created for me.\u201d And lest one say, who needs this trouble [testifying in a court case], it has already been stated: \u201cA witness who has seen or heard and declines to testify shall bear his sin\u201d (Lev. 5:1). And lest one say, why should we bear guilt for this one\u2019s blood, it has been stated: \u201cWhen the wicked perish, there is joy\u201d (Proverbs 11:10). (Sanhedrin 4:5)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To these sources, we may now add the declaration of our psalmist: \u201cO you who love the LORD, hate evil!\u201d (10).
