“The Lord reigns \u2014 let the earth rejoice, let many islands be glad” (97:1).<\/p>\n

I.
\nThe archipelago of faith is far
\nAway, I’m cautioned, and its islands hard
\nTo find. I’m warned that leaking boats are barred
\nFrom every bay, and though our scholars are
\nNow able to investigate a star,
\nWe don’t remember how our fathers tarred
\nTheir ships or charted routes, while some regard
\nThis voyage as archaic and bizarre.<\/p>\n

But I believe the daughter of the king
\nIs waiting there along the shoreline, where
\nA thousand trees from Eden’s orchard grow.
\nAnd I believe I’ll hear the Faith-bird sing
\nAmidst those trees, if I should persevere
\nUntil I reach the archipelago.<\/p>\n

\nII.
\nIf I should persevere, O Lord, and row
\nMy rowboat harder towards Your harbour where
\nThe Faith-bird nests \u2014 if I should persevere,
\nBelieving I can find that port although
\nI lost my father’s sextant long ago \u2014
\nIf I should persevere and somehow steer
\nMy boat by starlight till I reach a pier
\nWhere I could dock, despite the ebb and flow \u2014<\/p>\n

Is there a chance my rowing will succeed?
\nIs there a fraction of a chance that I
\nWill touch dry land and disembark? Is there
\nA chance at all I’ll watch the Faith-bird feed
\nHer fledglings or instruct them how to fly?
