{"id":87501,"date":"2021-01-25T07:16:35","date_gmt":"2021-01-25T05:16:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=87501"},"modified":"2021-01-25T07:16:35","modified_gmt":"2021-01-25T05:16:35","slug":"learn-your-history-well","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/learn-your-history-well\/","title":{"rendered":"Learn Your History Well"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"87501","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":62571,"related_cahpter":"662","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"Such as the punishment meted out at Massah and Meriba\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The writer and philosopher George Santayana famously said: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.&#8221; It appears that the end of this psalm confirms Santayana\u2019s observation, and by generously citing God\u2019s praises (v. 1-8,) recommends that we avoid future disputes that will surely result in Divine retribution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last portion of Psalm 95 contends that were Jews to properly study Divine punishments that have been meted out, particularly to the generation of the Exodus following the Sin of the Spies, they would realize that the only way to remain in God\u2019s good graces is not to test Him, and instead, comprehensively comply with His commandments:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not be stubborn as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah, in the wilderness, When your fathers put Me to the test, tried Me, though they had seen My deeds. Forty years I was provoked by that generation; I thought: \u201cThey are a senseless people; they would not know My ways.\u201d Concerning them I swore in anger: \u201cThey shall never come to My resting-place!\u201d (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8-11).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The place was named Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and because they tried the LORD, saying: \u201cIs the LORD present among us or not?\u201d (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exodus 17:7).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of the men who have seen My Presence and the signs that I have performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, and who have tried Me these many times and have disobeyed Me, Shall see the land that I promised on oath to their fathers; none of those who spurn Me shall see it\u2026<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your children roam the wilderness for forty years, suffering for your faithlessness, until the last of your carcasses is down in the wilderness. You shall bear your punishment for forty years, corresponding to the number of days\u2014forty days\u2014that you scouted the land: a year for each day. Thus, you shall know what it means to thwart Me (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numbers 14:22-3, 32-4).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The psalmist suggests that subsequent generations should take to heart what those redeemed from Egypt had to learn the \u201chard way,\u201d i.e., that an individual or group only gets a finite, not infinite, number of chances to atone for their shortcomings, and when those opportunities have been exhausted, appropriate Divine punishments will be meted out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a \u201cdisconnect\u201d between Psalms 95 and Numbers 14 appears in God saying that He was angry at the Jews over the course of forty years, when in fact, from the \u201creal-time\u201d account, it appears that the Divine punishment of forty years of wandering in the wilderness, constituted the punishment itself, rather than the extent of the displeasure of God with His people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are we to conclude that when a particular action results in prolonged estrangement between at least two parties, that one of them retains their displeasure over the course of the entire period of alienation, in order to see the punishment through?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":87502,"id":87502,"title":"ps95-massa meriba
