While living in Israel for several years, I seized every opportunity to attend Friday night services in Jerusalem\u2019s Bukharian Quarter. One of the attractions was the Bukharian practice to begin the service much earlier than customary in Jerusalem. Another was their practice to spread about a variety of aromatic herbs and spices after the service so that one could start off the Sabbath by reciting blessings over fragrances. Yet another was the brevity of the service itself: they went directly from the repetition of the `<\/em><\/span>amidah<\/span><\/em> of <\/span>mincha<\/span><\/em> to Psalm 29\u2014eliminating Psalms 95-99\u2014and recited only the first and last two stanzas of <\/span>l\u2019kha dodi<\/span><\/em> before reciting Psalm 92.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their elimination of the `<\/em><\/span>aleinu<\/span><\/em> prayer at the end of <\/span>minchah<\/span><\/em> is not unique. Many congregations treat it similarly on Yom Kippur, the justification (in both cases) being that since another service (\u2018<\/em><\/span>arvit<\/span><\/em> of Shabbat or <\/span>ne`ilah<\/span><\/em> of Yom Kippur) is to commence anon, there is no need for a prayer that demarcates the termination of the service. The elimination of Psalms 95-99 and an abbreviated of <\/span>l\u2019kha dodi<\/span><\/em>, however, are due to a more idiosyncratic reason: they reflect an ignorance or rejection of Kabbalistic practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kabbalat Shabbat<\/span><\/em> was innovated in 16<\/span>th<\/span> century Safed by the seminal kabbalists surrounding \u201cthe Ari\u201d (R. Isaac Luria) and subsequently circulated throughout the Jewish world alongside their mystical teachings. Bukhara was geographically so far outside the realm of mystical influence that the custom did not reach them. By the time the Bukharians came to Israel and found the custom entrenched there, the most they offered it was \u201clip service\u201d; the opening and closing stanzas of <\/span>l\u2019kha dodi<\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Its nonappearance among German Jews was more of a rebuff. A published record of the liturgical practices of 19<\/span>th<\/span> century Frankfort am Main (Shlomo Geiger: <\/span>K\u2019hilat Shlomo<\/span><\/em>) gives these instructions: <\/span>Kabbalat Shabbat<\/span><\/em> may be recited only in the new synagogue\u2014not in the old one. It could be led only by the deputy <\/span>hazan<\/span><\/em>, not the primary one, who could not lead it from the prayer leader\u2019s lectern (`<\/em><\/span>amud<\/span><\/em>) but only from the central platform (<\/span>bimah<\/span><\/em>) and could not wear a <\/span>tallit<\/span><\/em> while doing so. In other words, they declined to give it full liturgical recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n

This de facto rebuff of <\/span>Kabbalat Shabbat<\/span><\/em> comes to the fore when Friday is also a holiday eve when even those congregations that recite it weekly omit
