The very positive uplifting opening half then quickly shifts gears to a warning not to return to the ways of the Israelites in the desert.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm is recited as the opening prayer of the Shabbat evening service and this structure helps explain why. Two different reasons are given for the Sabbath in the two versions of the decalogue i Exodus and in Deuteronomy. In Exodus 20 the reason given for the Sabbath is that God created the world. This matches the first half of our Psalm. In Deuteronomy 5, the reason given is that the Israelites were slaves in Egypt. This seems to match the second half of our Psalm. The only difference is that the second half of the Psalm recounts the \u201cbad\u201d side of the exodus, the complaints of the people in the desert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This seems like an odd choice. There is also a shift in narrator voice- the first half is human to God, but the end of the second half is actually a mix, with the transition verses 6-7 written as author to other people, but verses 8-11 are God to humans. The creation of the world is universalist: all of creation benefited from this.The exodus from Egypt, however, was specific to the Israelites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The psalmist is reminding the people not take this second reason for granted. The very generation that God saved from Egypt also met His greatest wrath. Simple praise is not enough for the second reason; being the nation of God also requires
