Psalm 95:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nMoses–the leader of the Israelites and receiver of the Torah at Sinai, a shepherd chosen by God for his humility and loyalty to his sheep. The penultimate verse of the Torah describes him as the greatest prophet of all time.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nMoses wrote this psalm prophetically about the coming of the Messiah, when God will gather the people of Israel from among the nations and bring them to their homeland.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Praise–This is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nThis psalm speaks of the Days of Mashiach (Messiah) and of the ingathering of exiles preceding his arrival. Some view this psalm (and the following psalms through chapter 100) as addressing two methods by which God conducts the world–the natural and the miraculous. Others see it as praise of the righteous who, by accepting their suffering, hasten the redemption.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of eleven verses, subdivided into two parts.
\nIn verses 1-7, Moses calls out to all to sing God\u2019s praises and shout out to Him with joy, for He is the creator of the entire world. Let us therefore bow to Him, implores the author.
\nIn verses 8-11, the psalmist rebukes the congregation, reminding them that they must now fulfill their promise to obey God. They must take care not to act as the generation that wandered in the wilderness, who, as a result of their rebellious behavior, were not privileged to enter Israel and God\u2019s \u201cplace of rest\u201d–the Beit HaMikdash (Temple).<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nRecited as the opening paragraph of Kabbalat Shabbat (Friday night service).
\nRecited on Shabbat Hagadol (the Shabbat before Passover) in some congregations.
\nThe first three verses comprise part of the Shir Shel Yom (Psalm of the Day) for Wednesday.
\nThis is the only Shir Shel Yom composed of a compilation of verses from multiple psalms (with the intent of creating an inspiring message), rather than the normative singular psalm.<\/p>\n
