The venerable Aramaic Targum\u2019s rendition of the opening verse of our psalm reads \u201cA psalm and song that the first Adam uttered concerning the Sabbath day.\u201d This is consistent with a talmudic tradition that names Adam among \u201cthe ten elders\u201d (<\/span>z\u2019keinim<\/span><\/em>) who were joined with King David in the authorship of the Book of Psalms (Baba Batra 14b).<\/span><\/p>\n

Curiously, Rashi\u2019s commentary there illustrates this opinion with an entirely different verse, citing: \u201cYour eyes saw my unformed limbs; they were all recorded in Your book; in due time they were formed, to the very last one of them\u201d (139:16). His commentary here: \u201cA song with musical accompaniment of the Levites for the Sabbath day that they would recite on Sabbaths, and it deals with the world to come, which is entirely Sabbath,\u201d derives from the Mishnah that stipulates that \u201cThe song the Levites would recite in the Temple on Sabbaths was \u2018A psalm, a song for the Sabbath day; a psalm, a song for the future; for an everlasting day of tranquility and rest\u201d (Tamid 7:4).<\/span><\/p>\n

Ibn Ezra, characteristically, implicitly refuted the Talmudic tradition of its authorship by noting, succinctly, \u201cthe name of the psalmist is not mentioned,\u201d and Radak, as typical for him, was studiously uncommitted, stating only \u201cThis psalm was recited in the Temple on the Sabbath day. It deals with Sabbath matters.\u201d As for the connection with the Sabbath day, Radak commented:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sabbath day is better than other days for praising God because man is free of mundane needs and his soul is at rest from physical travail and can preoccupy itself with scholarship and divine service. (92:2)<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim, too, provided a Sabbath rationale:<\/span><\/p>\n

This psalm addresses God\u2019s providence in this world. Even if it appears that everything acts naturally, a discerning eye will observe His providence in it in the punishment of the wicked and the reward of the righteous even though God may disguise His providence from the masses in order to give them freedom of choice. Since the Sabbath day is evidence of providence and that the world is not surrendered to nature and accident\u2026 this psalm was designated for it. (92:1)<\/span><\/p>\n
