This psalm does not appear to have any connection with the Sabbath day, rather it is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise to God Who rose up against His enemies and destroyed them. For this reason I suggest that the introductory words do not refer to the seventh day of the week, rather to the day when the battles have been won, the enemies beaten; a day of rest from war and exhaustion is upon us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This psalm was established by our master, David, upon the victory over the main enemy nations in the war that is recorded in 2 Samuel 8 and in 1 Chronicles 18, where the nations that are mentioned include Edom, Amon, Moab, Amalek and the Philistines. In both of these chapters we find verses that read: \u201cfrom all the nations he had conquered\u201d and \u201cthat he had taken from all the nations,\u201d meaning that all of these nations were defeated in a single war.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding this war we find other psalms, as well \u2013 Psalm 48, a psalm of the Korahites, Psalm 83, a psalm of Asaph and Psalm 94 written by our master, David. Of these, Psalm 48 is a psalm of thanksgiving after the victory in war, Psalm 83 is a prayer that preceded the war, coming before the victory, and Psalm 94 is a prayer for support that was recited during the war. In Psalm 83 we find that other nations are mentioned \u2013 Ishmaelites, Hagrites, Gebal, Tyre and Assyria \u2013 nations that are not mentioned with regard to the war that is described here. Perhaps they joined the battle as incidental forces, as the verse states clearly with regard to Assyria: \u201cAssyria too joins forces with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe that all eight psalms until Psalm 101 \u2013 aside from Psalm 94 \u2013 are psalms of thanksgiving relating to this war. A support to this idea is the fact that the idea mentioned in Psalm 48 (v. 12) after the victory \u201cLet Mount Zion rejoice! Let the towns of Judah exult, because of Your judgments\u201d is exactly what is found in Psalm 97 (v. 8) with slight variation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
