Yossele Rosenblatt \u201cThe Lord Reigns\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Salomon Sulzer (who was mentioned in the previous post, in connection with Schubert\u2019s Psalm 92), is considered one of the central creators of modern Ashkenazi <\/span>chazzanut<\/span><\/i> (cantorial music), a style which can be characterized as \u201ccool\u201d relative to the warmer, more emotional Eastern European Chassidic style. It\u2019s power lay in its musical inventiveness. Sulzer represents the connections between <\/span>chazzanut<\/span><\/i> and more classical artistic creations. Following him there arose generations of artists who became the \u201cgolden age\u201d of the genre – until the middle of the 20th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yossele Rosenblatt (1882 – 1933) was one of the central figures in this golden age, as a cantor whose voice could open the very gates of heaven, and as a composer who created more than 600 <\/span>chazzanut <\/span><\/i>compositions. He was born in the Ukraine, but most of his work as a young man was in Vienna, and in the Hungarian communities in that area, and in the city of Hamburg in N. Germany. During this whole period, in addition to his work as a chazzan, he learned German art music, including the use of instrumental accompaniment in singing <\/span>chazzanut<\/span><\/i> that was common in communities in northern Germany.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1912, he left for New York, and became there the greatest chazzan and creator of cantorial music in the Jewish world. He also gave concerts where he would sing well-know operatic arias. The Great Depression influenced his situation, and he was forced to find additional sources of livelihood in order to pay off his debts. Rosenblatt, who previously had turned down opportunities to sing operatic roles, agreed now to appear on recordings, movies, and even with a popular repertoire. Sadly, he ended up meeting his death in the Land of Israel, where he traveled in 1933 in order to make a movie. After a day of shooting at the Dead Sea, he swam, fell ill, and died.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rosenblatt\u2019s legacy as a composer is a rich one, and to this day, his works are the backbone of every cantorial repertoire. \u201cHashem malach\u201d (\u201cThe Lord Reigns\u201d) which is sung in the Friday morning service is full of melodic ideas, frugal with its vocal trills (which are otherwise indispensable), and is in a festive major mode. In the concluding verse, Rosenblatt ascends to the falsetto, which his one of his trademarks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The clip features the lyrical tenor voice of the Israeli chazzan Azi Schwartz, who excels at singing Rosenblatt, in an arrangement for a male choir. Schwartz, like Rosenblatt, has relocated to the US, and like him, has achieved renown as the main chazzan in a main synagogue of New York, in addition to many recordings and concerts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
