  1. A song of the Sabbath day<\/em>. According to the heading of the psalm, the song was sung in the Temple on Shabbat. Today, as well, in our respective places of prayer, synagogues, it is part of the Shabbat evening service.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Superficial appearances<\/em>. If it seems like the wicked are flourishing – that\u2019s only temporary: \u201cthough the wicked sprout like grass, though all evildoers blossom, it is only that they may be destroyed forever\u201d (verse 8). What looks like growth and success, that\u2019s the moment before drying out and withering. But it is indeed misleading, and one needs a certain amount of wisdom to understand the wider context: \u201cA brutish man cannot know, a fool cannot understand this.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Palm and cedar<\/em>. The wicked are ephemeral annuals. The righteous are palms and cedars: strong, tall trees. Perhaps this is also saying that the righteous can grow anywhere; from the cold mountains, like the cedar, to the hot deserts like the palm.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Forever young<\/em>. Or as the psalm puts it: \u201cIn old age they still produce fruit; they are full of sap and freshness\u201d (verse 15).<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. It\u2019s good to give thanks!<\/em> Being thankful, grateful is a good in itself.
