Psalm 92:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nMoses–the leader of the Israelites and receiver of the Torah at Sinai, a shepherd chosen by God for his humility and loyalty to his sheep. The penultimate verse of the Torah describes him as the greatest prophet of all time.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Praise–This is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nThis psalm was sung by the Levi\u2019im (Levites) in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple) on Shabbat. It is viewed as an allusion to Olam Haba (the World to Come), an entirely spiritual existence, and thus referred to as \u201cYom Shekulo Shabbat\u201d–a \u201cday which is entirely Shabbat.\u201d While it is generally acknowledged that this chapter was authored by Moses, some suggest that it was composed by Adam upon being granted forgiveness for eating from the Tree of Knowledge.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of sixteen verses, subdivided into three parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-6, the psalmist asserts that it is good to give thanks to God. The Lord\u2019s deeds are great and profound, he declares, and as such they arouse in his heart feelings of joy and thanks. He prosaically speaks of recounting God\u2019s acts of kindness–of singing about them with the accompaniment of musical instruments–morning and evening.
\nIn verses 7-15, the wicked and their fleeting success are contrasted with the righteous and their lasting success. The wicked will be destroyed, suggests the author, yet the righteous will flourish.
\nIn verse 16, Moses proudly proclaims that God is his rock, righteous and upright.<\/p>\n

\nTalmud on Tehilim:<\/em>
\nVerse 1: \u201cA song for the Shabbos day.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Rosh Hashana 31a, states that this psalm was sung in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple) on Shabbat by the Levi\u2019im (Levites).
\nVerse 13: \u201cThe righteous will blossom like a date palm like a cedar in Lebanon, he will grow tall.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Bava Batra 90b, suggests that the Tzaddik (righteous man) is likened to both the cedar and the date palm precisely because each possesses only one of two praiseworthy qualities.
\nA date palm produces fruit but does not regenerate itself, a cedar, on the other hand, regenerates itself but does not bear fruit. The psalmist therefore compares the righteous to both, thereby implying that the Tzaddik both \u201cproduces fruit\u201d and \u201cregenerates\u201d.
\nVerse 16: \u201cTo declare that Adonoy is upright.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Kiddushin 82a, deduces that man\u2019s primary motivation in life should be \u201cattesting to the uprightness and greatness of God.\u201d While one must have an occupation and earn his keep, some individuals mistakenly believe that success and happiness are determined by precisely how much wealth they amass. The psalmist reminds us that such success, however, is fleeting. True happiness and success, we are admonished, result only from the learning of Torah and the observing of mitzvot, as only they are everlasting.<\/p>\n
