The oratorio \u201cElijah,\u201d which Mendelssohn wrote at the height of his musical popularity reflects his love of baroque, and especially to the music of Bach and Handel. \u201cElijah\u201d was written in two versions: German and English. It was performed first in England and was received as a natural continuation of the great English oratorios of Handel. Its performance in Germany occurred only after Mendelssohn\u2019s untimely death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The oratorio encompasses the main events in the life of the prophet Elijah as they are told in the Book of Kings. Its first half is based on 1 Kings, chapters 17-18, that is, the period of the great drought, until the coming of the rains. God\u2019s instruction to Elijah to go to Wadi Cherith and hide there is brought at the beginning, by an angel. To this, the choir joins in the singing of verses 11-12 of Ps 91, \u201c\u201cFor He will order His angels to guard you.\u201d The choir sings in eight independent, separate parts. The rich, luxurious textures of the psalm allow for it to be performed a capella, which is how it is usually performed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The choral piece \u201cFor He will order His angels to guard you\u201d uses the short text freely and creatively. Even though the psalm is sung from beginning to end, the impression is created of an instrumental piece, completely well-formed as music with no words. There is a wide variety of relationships among the voices throughout the piece; the opening verse is a dialogue between the male and the female voices.
