The penultimate verse of the Torah describes him as the greatest prophet of all time.

When and Why:
Moses wrote this psalm prophetically about the difficulties that Israel will face in exile. In it, he tells Israel to remain faithful that the ultimate redemption will eventually arrive.

Genre:
Psalm of Individual Confidence–In this psalm, the worshipper expresses absolute certainty that his prayers will be heard.

Chapter Summary:
Moses describes here the excellence of the Tzaddik (righteous individual) who trusts in God. He further depicts four levels of cleaving to God and of Divine Supervision. He also speaks out against plagues, and concludes with a song of thanksgiving.

This psalm consists of sixteen verses, subdivided into two sections.
In verses 1-8, the author proclaims that God will protect the one who trusts in Him. Accordingly, such an individual has no need to fear the darkness. He asserts, too, that God will destroy the wicked.
In verses 9-16, he declares that God will send his angels to guard the Tzaddik on his path. One who believes in the Lord’s protection, Moses assures the reader, will be awarded with long days and seeing true salvation.

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:
To ward off evil spirits–Verse 3 states: “For He will save you from the snare trap, from destructive pestilence.”
To alleviate fear–Verse 5 states: “You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.”

Talmud on Tehillim:
Verse 6: “The pestilence that prowls in darkness, nor the deadly plague that ravages at noon.”
This verse speaks of the various demons which lurk at nighttime and at noontime.
The Talmud, Pesachim 111b, informs us that it is important to know the difference between the various types of demons, in order to utilize the proper wording for an amulet used to ward off the evil spirits. (Such amulets, while not common in Ashkenazic circles, are still found in some Sefardic communities.)
Verse 10: “No evil shall befall you, and no plague shall come near your tent.”
The Talmud, Berachot 55b, deduces that “No harm will befall you” refers to the rewards given to a righteous individual. A deserving person, suggests the Talmud, is shown good dreams, while a non-deserving person is shown bad dreams.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff.

psalms -
