The penultimate verse of the Torah describes him as the greatest prophet of all time.

When and Why:
Moses is castigating the people. He speaks of the weakness of man and the shortness of his days. The years that one is alive, can either be misused tools resulting in futility, or with spiritual purposefulness, man can fulfill the reason he was created.

Genre:
Psalm of Communal Lament–This psalm contains teaching and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.

Chapter Summary:
This psalm opens the fourth book of the Book of Psalms. The first of eleven psalms which tradition attribute to Moses, it is a lament over the frailty of man and the short span of his days.

This psalm consists of seventeen verses, subdivided into two parts. The first clause of verse 1 serves as a heading.
In verses 1-10, the psalmist, through the use of simile, focuses on God’s eternity, and contrasts it to the shortness and suffering of the life of man.
In verses 11-17, he turns to prayer, asking for a life of contentment and joy. He petitions God with a request for the attainment of wisdom, and ends with a prayer on behalf of the servants of God, that they will be privileged to merit His lovingkindness, loyalty and pleasantness.

Introductory Word:
תפילה–Tefilah–Prayer

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:
To repel an evil spirit–Verse 17 states: “May the pleasantness of my Master our God be upon us and the work of our hands established for us, and the works of our hands–establish it.”

Talmud on Tehillim:
Verse 10: “The days of our years in them [total] seventy years, and with strength, eighty years.”
The Talmud, Pesachim 94b, uses this verse to relate how Nebuchadnezzar, the greatest king of ancient Babylonia, was the master of self-deception. Evil and wicked, he perceived himself to be so great and lofty that he could ascend the heights of the “Most High”. In actuality, he too was subject to the rules of man and his finality, and quite small in comparison to the vast world and heavens which God had created. Man is temporal, inasmuch as he is here on earth for a mere seventy or eighty years and eventually destined to die. Accordingly, no man should think of himself as so great, as only God is everlasting.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff.

psalms -
