He stands at the pinnacle of the Flemish school that held sway in the churches and royal courts in all Europe. In his youth, he left his homeland and reached Italy, where he quickly became the maestro di capella in one of the important churches of Rome. After some years of wandering, he decided to settle in the royal court of Munich, which was his center of activity throughout his life. “Tui Sunt Caeli” is one of more than 600 choral motets which he composed, and was designed to serve as a “offertorium” (a selection from Psalms sung during the preparation of the bread and wine of the eucharist) for the Christmas mass.

The composition reveals influences of the relatively late “Venetian school,” which was developed by Lassus’ student, Giovanni Gabrieli. Indeed, it was known that Lassus used to make trips to Italy, to keep himself up to date with the latest musical developments, and integrate them into his style, which was considered conservative. That fact is evident in his use of eight voices, which at the height of the composition, reaches a marvelous web of eight melodies each moving independently.

Likewise, Lassus divides the choir in two, and creates a sort of stereophonic dialogue, which also is influenced by the music of St. Marco’s Cathedral in Venice. The video here emphasizes this connection with the instrumental background for the vocal parts with a woodwind ensemble.

Lassus was faithful to the Italian style which integrates the notes with the verbal content as much as possible. Therefore, the opening verse – “The heaven is Yours” – soars with high notes, while the choral response – “The earth is Yours, too” – stays at the bottom of the vocal register. “The world and all it holds” is expressed in very tonally rich chords. “You established them” begins with a somewhat melancholy dialogue between the choirs, while the ending as well, where “righteousness” and “justice” are represented by calls from one choir to another.

The long conclusion to “Righteousness and justice are the base of Your throne” is a supreme display of control in the art of Renaissance contrapuntal composition, for eight voices.

“Tui sunt coeli” – Roland de Lassus
Extrait du Magnum Opus Musicum (1604).
