Psalm 89:<\/p>\n

Author: <\/em>
\nEitan the Ezrahite–a composer and singer in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple), perhaps the brother of Heiman the Ezrahite. Alternatively, the Talmud identifies him with Abraham our forefather.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nThis psalm was written as a lament over the prolonged exile and the termination of Davidic rule over Israel.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Communal Lament–This psalm contains teaching and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.
\nPsalm of Royalty–This psalm describes how God reigns supreme. It focuses on the human king of Israel, or upon God as King of Israel.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:
\nGod\u2019s kindness to the Jewish people, and to the royal line of David in particular, is eternal. Israel\u2019s confidence that all of His assurances will surely be fulfilled has historically given the nation the strength to endure.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of fifty-three verses, subdivided into six parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-5, the psalmist takes it upon himself to sing forever of God\u2019s acts of lovingkindness. He also acknowledges God\u2019s eternal covenant with David.
\nIn verses 6-19, he recounts the praises of God as the One who rules the swelling of the sea, has crushed Rahab (Egypt), has created the world and rules over it justly. He further describes the happiness of the people who crown God as King.
\nIn verses 20-38, he expresses and expounds upon the promise to David that he has been chosen for an everlasting monarchy.
\nIn verses 39-46, he laments that God\u2019s promise to David has in fact not been fulfilled. He describes at length the downfall of the Davidic kingdom, in contrast to its promised greatness.
\nIn verses 47-52, the psalmist cries out to God. He asks what has become of the previous promises to David, and boldly declares that enemies are vilifying the servants of God, God Himself, and His anointed.
\nIn verse 52, Eitan concludes with blessing the name of God for all eternity.<\/p>\n

Technical Terminology: <\/em>
\n\u05de\u05e9\u05db\u05d9\u05dc–Maskil–a discerning person, alternatively, a giver of instruction, perhaps denoting a translator of the chapter (Rashi).
\n\u05e1\u05dc\u05d4–Selah–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nTo prevent loss of organs or limbs due to disease.
\nTo avoid imprisonment–Verse 19 states: \u201cFor Adonoy is our shield, and the Holy One of Israel is our King.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nMost of the verses are found in the introduction to Selichot (Penitential Service).
\nVerse 53 is the first verse of Baruch Hashem Le\u2019olam<\/em>–one of the closing paragraphs of Pesukei Dezimra<\/em> (introductory Verses of Praise to the Shacharit morning service). It also opens Baruch Hashem Le\u2019olam<\/em> of the weekday Ma\u2019ariv (evening service).
\nVerses 16-18 are recited following the blowing of the Shofar on Rosh HaShanah.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 1: \u201cAn instruction of Ethan the Ezrahite.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Bava Batra 15a, teaches that Eitan HaEzrachi actually refers to our forefather, Avraham Avinu (Abraham), so called as the meaning of the word eitan is \u201cstrength.\u201d
\nVerse 33: \u201cThen I will punish them with the rod for their sins.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Yoma 86a, explains that there are three levels of atonement. If one transgresses a positive commandment and then repents, he is forgiven immediately; if one transgresses a negative commandment and then repents, his punishment is suspended and the day of Yom Kippur atones for the sin; finally, if one commits sins of such gravity as to be punishable by death or excommunication, and then repents, both his repentance and Yom Kippur suspend God\u2019s punishment, and only suffering purges the sin.<\/p>\n
