We saw in Psalm 40 <\/span><\/a>that King David used the image of a pit to discuss his despair. King David also talks often about his tribulations in the night time. In Psalm 88, the Sons of Korach use this image as well. Interestingly, although the authorship of this psalm is the sons of Korach, it is written as if from an individual. It is as if this psalm is written from the perspective of someone who was present at the demise of Korach himself. ” I am numbered with those who go down to the Pit; I am a helpless man” (v. 5).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The use of a pit, darkness and being pulled down to “sheol<\/em>” all seem to reference the incident of Korach’s demise: “and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their households, all Korah\u2019s people and all their possessions. They went down alive into Sheol, with all that belonged to them; the earth closed over them and they vanished from the midst of the congregation” (Numbers 16:32-33).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The same words are used to describe the story of Korach. By using these vivid images, the sons of Korach once again bring in elements from their imagined history to help personalize and color their psalmist authorship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
