The inability of the dead to serve or praise God is a recurring motif in the Book of Psalms, its best-known instance, perhaps, coming in the Hallel: \u201cThe dead cannot praise You, nor can any who descend into silence\u201d (115:17).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three verses in our psalm convey this idea.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do You work wonders for the dead (<\/span>meitim<\/span><\/em>)? Do the shades (<\/span>rephaim<\/span><\/em>) rise to praise You? Selah. Is Your faithful care recounted in the grave, Your constancy in the place of perdition? Are Your wonders made known in the netherworld, Your beneficent deeds in the land of oblivion? (11-13)<\/span><\/p>\n

If we were to add these several references together, we would have a composite portrait of the state after death\u2014i.e., the grave\u2014as one marked by darkness (<\/span>choshekh<\/span><\/em>), oblivion (<\/span>n\u2019shiya<\/span><\/em>), silence (<\/span>duma<\/span><\/em>\u2019<\/span><\/i>), and perdition (<\/span>abadon<\/span><\/em>). Perdition, from the Latin <\/span>perdere<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/i> to make away with, destroy, or lose, has the same semantic meaning as <\/span>the Hebrew root <\/span>A-B-D<\/span><\/i>, to lose or perish.<\/span><\/p>\n

The noun<\/span> abadon<\/span><\/em> appears only 5 times in Tanakh (once in Proverbs and three times in Job), twice in synonymous parallelism with <\/span>she\u2019ol<\/span><\/em>, a standard designation for the grave, and once in parallelism with <\/span>mavet<\/span><\/em>, death. Radak (12) interpreted it as \u201cthe grave, where bodies perish and disintegrate,\u201d which links up with the Targum\u2019s rendition of the \u201cshades\u201d (<\/span>rephaim<\/span><\/em>, 11) as \u201cbodies that have decayed in dust.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In Christian theology, however, perdition signifies a place of punishment in which unrepentant sinners are confined for eternity\u2014as opposed to purgatory, which, as its name implies, is where sinners are sent to be purged of their sins prior to entering heaven\u2014and is oddly reminiscent of the inscription Dante described that hung over the gates of Hell: \u201cAbandon all hope, ye who enter
