Michael Haydn (1737-1806): Canon Domine Deus, for children\u2019s choir<\/span><\/p>\n

The subtitles that appear at the beginning of the video clip of this piece attribute the work to Franz Josef Haydn (1732-1809), but that is an error. The canon \u201cDomine Deus,\u201d which is essential repertoire for every European children\u2019s choir, was written by the younger brother of the great composer, Michael Haydn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A canon is of course a song that at some point divides into different voices. Voice A continues with the melody, while Voice B goes back to the beginning, and miraculously, the two melodies harmonize with each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

The canon here, based on verses 2-3 from Psalm 88 has four voices, which is twice the miracle. The canon was designed to be an \u201coffertorium\u201d – a selection from Psalms that was sung at the Catholic mass, during the preparation of the bread and wine of the eucharist.<\/span><\/p>\n

The important principle of the canon is the interweaving, and the mutual imitation, of the voices. In this respect, Michael Haydn\u2019s life was a sort of \u201cimitation\u201d of the life of his older and more famous brother, Josef. Five years after Josef left home (at age 8) to be a choir boy at the church of St. Stephen in Vienna, Michael began the same path. And five years after Josef\u2019s voice changed and he had to leave the church, the same thing happened to Michael.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Similar to his brother who was granted a position for many years by the Hungarian prince Esterhazy, Michael, too, receives a position in the city of Salzburg, and holds it until the end of his life. Thus Michael witnessed the growth of the wunderkind of that town, and befriended him, the young Wolfganf Amadeus Mozart.<\/span><\/p>\n

Josef Haydn held the compositions of his younger brother Michael in high esteem, and his prodigious creative output. Michael wrote a great deal of liturgical music (Salzburg was a city controlled by the Church), but he also excelled at composing symphonies, in numbers approaching those of his brother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is he less famous than his older brother, and his works less played than his? Anyone who listens to his works can try to answer that question, which are of great quality in and of themselves.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
