{"id":86486,"date":"2021-01-12T13:30:54","date_gmt":"2021-01-12T11:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=86486"},"modified":"2021-01-12T13:30:54","modified_gmt":"2021-01-12T11:30:54","slug":"the-big-book-of-heaven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/the-big-book-of-heaven\/","title":{"rendered":"The Big Book of Heaven"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"86486","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":34243,"related_cahpter":"654","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"Names without number\r\n\r\n\u00a0","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several references or allusions distributed throughout Tanakh to the idea that there is a book in heaven in which God inscribes the names of all the people alive on the face of the earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Isaiah\u2019s many eschatological prophecies promises: \u201cAll who are inscribed for life in Jerusalem\u2014 shall be called holy\u201d (4:2-3).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the spirit of Isaiah, Daniel prophesied: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that time, your people will be rescued, all who are found inscribed in the book\u201d (12:1).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the incident of the golden calf, Moses challenged God to \u201coverlook their sin or erase me from the book You have written\u201d (Exodus 32:32).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A comparable reference appears in our psalm: \u201cThe Lord will inscribe in the register of peoples that each was born there\u201d (6), which Ibn Ezra interpreted, metaphorically, as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lord<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. God, who alone knows the number of all the people in the world when He inscribes them [in His book], can number all the wise men who are born in Zion. Only God can number them, for they are far more numerous than what men can count. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This One Was Born There<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The word \u201cthere\u201d refers to Zion. The meaning of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bi-khetov<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in the register) is, \u201cwhen God inscribes.\u201d The books refer to the heavens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his commentary on Exodus 32:32, Ibn Ezra, who wrote extensively on astrology, made the same identification of \u201cthe book\u201d with \u201cthe heavens,\u201d writing: \u201cAll fates, general and particular, are [inscribed] in the heavenly bodies, as our rabbis declared, life-span, children, and sustenance [depend not on merit but on the constellations (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mazal<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)] (Mo`ed Katan 28a).\u201d And anticipating the question, If that is the case, then of what use is obedience to God through the observance of His law, Ibn Ezra added: \u201cGod can add [to the fated amounts] according to how one fears Him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is likely that is the same \u201cbook\u201d we refer to in our High Holidays liturgy as \u201cThe Book of the Living\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seifer ha-Chayim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in which we seek to be inscribed.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":86487,"id":86487,"title":"ps87-book
