The verbal root Ch-S-D appears four times in our psalm:7 \u201cGuard my life for I am faithful (<\/span>chasid<\/span><\/em>)\u201d (2), \u201cYou [Lord]\u2026 are abounding in steadfast love\u201d (<\/span>rav chesed<\/span><\/em>, 5), \u201cFor Your steadfast love (<\/span>chasd\u2019kha<\/span><\/em>) toward me is great\u201d (13), and, finally, in a verse that resonates with Moses\u2019s declaration of God\u2019s 13 attributes (Exodus 34:6), <\/span>\u201c<\/span>But You, O Lord, are a God compassionate and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love (<\/span>rav chesed<\/span><\/em>) and faithfulness\u201d (\u2018<\/em><\/span>emet<\/span><\/em>)\u201d (15).<\/span><\/p>\n

A careful examination of the English translations of these verses shows uniformity, but not consistency. The greatest consistency is in the rendition, twice, of <\/span>rav chesed<\/span><\/em> as \u201csteadfast love,\u201d but the same translation is also provided in v.13 for the noun <\/span>chasd\u2019kha<\/span><\/em> unaccompanied by the adjective <\/span>rav<\/span><\/em>. Furthermore, if three forms of Ch-S-D are treated as \u201csteadfast love,\u201d then why is <\/span>chasid<\/span><\/em> (2) translated as \u201cfaithful\u201d? Even if faithfulness and steadfastness are reasonably synonymous, how can faithfulness also be the translation of \u2018<\/em><\/span>emet<\/span><\/em> (15)?<\/span><\/p>\n

The answer, I believe, is that we have come to regard <\/span>chesed ve\u2018emet<\/span><\/em> as a hendiadys (from the Greek meaning \u201ctwo for one\u201d), a term we have met on several previous occasions signifying that what appear to be two separate words joined by a conjunction are really one compound word. Just as Abraham introduced himself to the Hittites of Hebron as <\/span>ger v\u2019toshav<\/span><\/em> (Gen. 23:4), meaning a resident stranger, Jacob\u2019s request to be buried in the Land of Israel was a <\/span>chesed ve\u2019emet<\/span><\/em> (Gen. 47:29), a true act of lovingkindness.<\/span><\/p>\n

This appreciation makes it possible to treat <\/span>chesed<\/span><\/em> and \u2018<\/span>emet<\/span><\/em> as entirely synonymous\u2014at least, when they appear in close proximity to one another. Hence, a <\/span>chasid<\/span><\/em> is characterized by both steadfastness and faithfulness, and one who seeks \u2018<\/span>emet<\/span><\/em> is faithfully and steadfastly seeking truth.<\/span><\/p>\n
