Korah and his cohorts perished in the aftermath of the rebellion, yet his sons, who repented, survived.

Genre:
Psalm of Praise–This is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God’s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.
Psalm of Zion–This psalm glorifies God’s city and His holy mount in which He has placed His abode.

Chapter Summary:
In this psalm, the singers praise the excellent qualities of Jerusalem. They proclaim that the holy city is the source of Divine Inspiration and refinement of the intellect.

This psalm consists of seven verses, subdivided into two parts. The beginning of the first verse serves as a heading.
In verses 1 & 2, the sons of Korach sing praises of Zion.
In verses 4-7, they proclaim that Zion is the birthplace of all who come to it to serve God, Jews and non-Jews alike, including those who come from far off lands. All peoples of the world, they assert, have the right to be considered natives of Zion. Verse 7 further describes the scene of celebration and joy when the pilgrims gather in Zion.

Introductory Words:
מזמור–Mizmor–Musical Accompaniment
שיר–Shir—Song

Technical Terminology:
סלה–Selah–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, “Selah” may mean “everlasting.”

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:
To protect a city or community (say this and the following chapter)–verse 3 states: “Glorious things are spoken of you, [for you are] the city of God.”

Talmud on Tehillim:
Verse 2: “Adonoy loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.”
The Talmud, Berachot 8a, deduces from here that as of the time of the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash (Temple), God loves the study of his laws even more than the act of going to a house of worship. We are told that from the day that the Beit HaMikdash was destroyed, the Holy One has in this world only the “four cubits” of halacha (Jewish law). When the Beit HaMikdash existed, it was there that the Shechinah (Divine Presence) dwelled in this world. In its absence, the Beit Midrash (house of study) takes its place. Accordingly, one who prays after engaging in words of Torah is considered as if he has prayed in the Beit HaMikdash itself.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff.

psalms -
