Psalm 86:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid wrote this psalm when he was in exile escaping Saul. In it, he prays that God save him from the people who are trying to kill him.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nThis psalm was composed by King David while fleeing from Saul. He prays, as we all must, for Divine deliverance from the power of those who sought his life. He then acknowledges all of the loving kindness already bestowed upon him by God.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of seventeen verses, subdivided into four parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 1-7, King David requests of God to hear his prayers and save him.
\nIn verses 8-10, he praises God.
\nIn verses 11-13, he once again prays, focusing on his present troubles. He beseeches God to assist him in following in His path. He then proceeds by making a vow to God.
\nIn verses 14-17, the Psalmist reaches out yet again to God. He asks God to have mercy on him and bring him salvation.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nTo be saved from an evil spirit–Verse 2 states: \u201cPreserve my soul for I am devoted, deliver Your servant, my God, who trusts in You.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 2: \u201cPreserve my soul for I am devoted.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 4a, deduces that King David said to God: \u201cAll the kings of the east and west (denoting the entire civilized world) sleep until three hours into the day, but I arise at midnight to give thanks to You.\u201d Tradition tells us that before midnight, David would dedicate himself to his own spiritual growth through Torah study. But after midnight, he would compose lofty songs of praise and thanksgiving.
\nVerse 17: \u201cGive me a sign of Your kindness, that my enemies may see it and be ashamed, for You, Adonoy, have helped me and comforted me.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Shabbat 30a, teaches that King David here is asking God to display a clear sign of favor for him, indicating forgiveness for his sin regarding Bathsheba. Such a public sign would lead all who had assailed and denounced David to feel ashamed for their actions. God informed David that he was indeed forgiven, but that this forgiveness would not be made public during his lifetime. Rather, his exoneration would become known to all only in the time of the reign of his son Solomon. Indeed, when Solomon finished building the Temple, he was unable to place the Aron HaKodesh (Holy Ark) into the Holy of Holies, for the Temple gates blocked the way! Nothing helped, until the king beseeched God for the sake of his father and implored: \u201cRemember the righteousness of Your servant David.\u201d Only then did the gates relent, allowing the ark to be placed in its proper location. At that time, we are told, \u201cthe faces of David\u2019s enemies darkened like the undersides of a kettle, and all of Israel knew that God had forgiven David for the sin of Bathsheba.\u201d<\/p>\n
