Verses 9-12 enumerate several of the divine attributes (e.g., peace, salvation, faithfulness, and truth) that, providing the people of Israel remain \u201cfaithful and not turn to folly\u201d (9), \u201cwill dwell in our land\u201d (10).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, however, vs. 11-12, play a singular role in a significant midrash on the creation of mankind.<\/span><\/p>\n

Simon said. When the Holy One, blessed be He, came to create Adam, the angels were divided over it. Some said he should not be created, while others said he should. This is what is stated: \u201cFaithfulness and truth meet; justice and well-being kiss\u201d (11). Faithfulness said let him be created because he will perform acts of benevolence, while truth said he should not be created because he is full of falsehoods. Justice said let him be created because he acts justly, while well-being [alt: peace] said let him not be created because he is full of conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n

What did the Holy One, blessed be He, do? He took truth and cast it to the ground, as stated: \u201cYou cast truth earthwards\u201d (Daniel 8:12). The ministering angels said before the Holy One, blessed be He: Master of the universe. Why are you humiliating your chief of the court ceremonies [i.e., the angel of truth]? Raise truth up from the ground. Whereupon it states: \u201cTruth springs up from the earth; justice looks down from heaven\u201d (12; Gen Rabbah 8:5).<\/span><\/p>\n

Rashi, perhaps bearing this very midrash in mind, combined these ingredients into a portrait of divine-human harmony:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFaithfulness and truth meet\u201d; If Israel shall be speakers of truth, then faithfulness will greet them from heaven. And the justice that Israel performs, and God\u2019s peace, will kiss each other as stated: \u201cThe act of justice [brings] peace\u201d (Isaiah 32:17). When Israel speaks truth and the justice they perform is viewed from heaven, then the Holy One, blessed be He, \u201cwill bestow His bounty and our land will yield its produce.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
