Psalm 85:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nSons of Korach–Korach rebelled against his cousins Moses and Aaron, and challenged their authority. Korah and his cohorts perished in the aftermath of the rebellion, yet his sons, who repented, survived.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nThe sons of Korach wrote this psalm prophetically about the exile from Israel. In it, they pray to God to return the people of Israel to their homeland.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Communal Lament–This psalm contains teaching and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nThe sons of Korach composed this psalm regarding the present exile. It is a plea for the Jewish people\u2019s redemption and return to their land. \u201cWill You forever be angry with us?\u201d, they boldly declare.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of fourteen verses, subdivided into two parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-8, the sons of Korach offer a prayer of thanks for the salvation that occurred in the past, and proceed with a request regarding the future.
\nIn verses 9-14, God, as it were, responds to the prayer with words of hope.<\/p>\n

\nMizmor<\/em>–Musical Accompaniment<\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:
\nSelah<\/em>–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nTo find favor in the eyes of a friend–Verses 4 and 5 state: \u201cYou have withdrawn all Your wrath, You have turned back from the fierceness of Your anger. Return to us, God of our deliverance, and annul Your anger towards us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nVerse 8 comprises one of the verses of Hoshia et Amecha, a paragraph of Pesukei Dezimra (introductory Verses of Praise to the Shacharit morning service).
\nVerse 14 is found in the funeral service.<\/p>\n

Biblical Personalities:<\/em>
\nYaakov<\/em>–Jacob–also called Israel, the third patriarch, considered the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was the brother of Esav, and was married to Leah and Rachel.<\/p>\n
