Psalm 84:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\n\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9 \u05e7\u05e8\u05d7–Sons of Korach–Korach rebelled against his cousins Moses and Aaron and challenged their authority. Korach and his cohorts perished in the aftermath of the rebellion, yet his sons, who repented, survived.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nThe sons of Korach wrote this psalm prophetically about their exile from Israel and the people of Israel\u2019s longing to reconnect to God in their homeland.<\/p>\n

Genre: <\/em>
\nPsalm of Praise–This is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.
\nPsalm of Zion–This psalm glorifies God\u2019s city and His holy mount in which He has placed His abode.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nThe composers of this psalm express their own personal yearning, as well as that of all exiles, for the redemption of Zion and rebuilding of the Holy Temple. The sons of Korach further pray for the knowledge to fathom the glory of the Creator to the utmost limit of human intelligence.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of thirteen verses, subdivided into four parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-4, the psalmists express their yearning for the Temple.
\nIn verses 5-8, they describe the good fortune of those who dwell in the house of God and those who come on pilgrimages before Him.
\nIn verses 9-10, they request that their prayer be heard and that God extend His protection to the king of Israel.
\nIn verses 11-13, they conclude by declaring that it is good to be in the house of God and to trust in Him.<\/p>\n

Musical Instrument:<\/em>
\n\u05d2\u05ea\u05d9\u05ea–Gittit<\/em>–A Stringed Instrument; perhaps from the city of Gath<\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:<\/em>
\nSelah<\/em>–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor a debilitating disease–Verses 8 and 9 state: \u201cThey go from strength to strength, [every one[ appears before God in Zion, Adonoy, God of Hosts, hear my prayer, give ear, God of Jacob.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biblical Personalities: <\/em>
\nYaakov<\/em>–Jacob–also called Israel, the third patriarch, considered the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was the brother of Esav, and was married to Leah and Rachel.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim: <\/em>
\nVerse 5: \u201cFortunate are those who dwell in Your house.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 32b, infers from this verse that one should wait a few moments upon arriving in the synagogue before commencing prayers. The Talmud further elaborates that the early pious and righteous Jews would mediate and ready themselves for \u201cone hour\u201d before and after they prayed, in order to both prepare for prayer and to contemplate what they had gained during prayer.
\nVerse 8: \u201cThey go from strength to strength.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 64a, teaches that \u201cone who leaves a house of prayer and [immediately] enters a house of study, will merit to receive the Shechinah (Divine Presence).<\/p>\n
