We have seen these names before in both the five books of Moses and the early prophets. But what Asaph does is unique: he also lists the familial connections of some of the enemies to the Israelites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edom and the\u00a0 Ishmaelites are listed together along with Moab and the &#8220;Hagrites&#8221;. The term Hagerites only appears in Chronicles. Hagar was the maid servant of Sara. When Sara was childless, she gave her servant to Abraham as a concubine. The Ishmaelites are also rarely mentioned in the battle context. Later in verse 9, Asaph refers to the &#8220;children of Lot.&#8221; This is most likely a reference to Amon and Moab who are the descendants of Lot, Abraham&#8217;s nephew.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would Asaph go out of his way to mention these two familiar connections?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the message is that even many of the enemies of Israel were at one time family. So too, for many years the tribes of Israel were enemies as well. They fought amongst themselves in Judges, they split into two kingdoms and then warred with each other until the northern tribes were exiled. At this late stage when the enemies encircle the last remnant of the tribe of Judah, Asaph wants everyone to remember that these enemies were also once family. And while these enemies are long lost, that family will one day return and then all will know \u201cthat God is alone and most high over all the earth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":false,"embedded_video":"","video_duration":"","show_fb_comments":true,"credit_media":""},"tile":{"top_caption":"A Family Affair","main_caption":"Perhaps the message is that many of the enemies of Israel were at one time family.
