  1. Between heaven and earth<\/em>. There are those who read the psalm as a divine judgement of celestial beings who have failed in their appointed tasks, and not as criticism of flesh and blood judges. You are invited to read the psalm again and decide which interpretation makes more sense to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. A peek upwards<\/em>. Verse 1 suggests a mental image of God as the king\/judge, who is sitting, or standing, among the divine retinue. This is an image that we\u2019ve encountered before, 340 chapters ago (1 Kings 22) and we will meet again in 100 chapters in the book of Job.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Removing an obstacle<\/em>. Verses 6-7 grapple with a familiar psychological obstacle. The \u201clittle person\u201d has a certain amount of fear or awe of people of high rank. Their high status gives them a certain air of superiority, and s\/he feels lowly in comparison: \u201cI had taken you for divine beings, sons of the Most High, all of you.\u201d How do we overcome this? We need to remind ourselves that \u201cbut you shall die as men do, fall like any prince.\u201d Even the one-percenters, the prime minister or president, Nobel prize winners, etc – are all (just) people. Kohelet (in another 160 chapters) will repeat this important message, in case we forget by then.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The bases of society<\/em>. Justice and righteousness are the foundations that make society possible. Thus, for those who are in charge of these realms, whether leaders or judges, if \u201cThey neither know nor understand, they go about in darkness;\u201d the the result is that \u201call the foundations of the earth totter\u201d (verse 5).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
