Psalm 82:<\/p>\n

Author: <\/em>
\nAsaf–a composer of several psalms and a patriarch of a family of singers in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple).<\/p>\n

When and Why: <\/em>
\nAsaf wrote this psalm about judges who were cheating the poor and letting people get away with theft.<\/p>\n

Genre: <\/em>
\nPsalm of Communal Lament–This psalm contains teaching and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nAsaf describes how God stands in the Divine Assembly, watching over the judges to see if they in fact administer true justice. Accordingly, this psalm warns against perversion of the law.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of eight verses.<\/em>
\nIn verse 1, the psalmist speaks of God as standing in judgement.
\nIn verses 2-7, he rebukes judges who judge corruptly and do not fulfill their duty.
\nIn verse 8, he concludes by asking God to rise and judge the earth, for He will rule over all of the nations.<\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:<\/em>
\n\u05e1\u05dc\u05d4–Selah–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor success on a mission–Verse 4 states: \u201cRescue the lowly and the needy, save them from the hand of the wicked.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nRecited as the Shir Shel Yom (Psalm of the Day) of Tuesday
\nRecited by some congregations on Hoshana Rabbah (the seventh day of Sukkot).<\/p>\n
