Why is it important that we be reminded that, while in Egypt, Joseph “learned a language (he) had not known (81:6)?” The background story is that after Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, Pharaoh wanted to appoint Joseph to a very high national position. But a qualification for national leadership at that level included the ability to speak all 70 languages of the world. Joseph, having been brought to Egypt as a slave, certainly didn’t arrive with that capacity. So, the angel Gabriel came to teach Joseph these languages in one night. He was successful but only after a letter from God’s name was added to Joseph’s name making it H’Yosef (81:6).

This prerequisite for being multilingual is not isolated in the Torah. In Genesis 10 we are provided with the enumeration of exactly 70 descendants of Noah, from which we learn that the world would be comprised of 70 nations. In Deuteronomy 27 we are told that Moses scribed the Torah in 70 languages to make it accessible to the whole world. The men of the Great Assembly in the days of the Prophets were required to speak all 70 languages, and it is a precept in Jewish Law that one can not rule on a case unless they speak the language of the parties involved – using an interpreter is not sufficient since one can lose nuance.

But this verse says “a language” in the singular, so which language is it referring to?

Rabbi Shmuel Veffer has a beautiful analogy for the 70 languages, relating that each one represents a unique nuance of Torah and, “Just like white light can be exploded into a rainbow of colors, where each color represents a single aspect of the white light, so too Torah can be split into 70 languages, each language representing a single nuance or aspect of the totality of Torah.”

With that explanation, we understand that in order to fully appreciate the depth of Torah, we must consider all the nuances of language. Perhaps this chapter of Psalms also teaches us that, just like a letter from God’s name was added to Joseph’s name to enable him to learn a new language, so too once God is included in the language equation, one singular language of Torah emerges.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ps81-egyptian-language.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1152,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/ps81-egyptian-language.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1440
Even Joseph had to learn a new language -
