But just when is debatable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Se`adyah\u2019s Arabic translation reads: \u201cBlow the [ram\u2019s] horn on the first days of the months, on the [sacrificial] offerings of national holidays,\u201d and his commentary notes that this is in fulfillment of a Torah prescription: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And on your joyous occasions\u2014your fixed festivals and new moon days\u2014you shall sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and your sacrifices of well-being\u201d (Numbers 10:10). The Aramaic Targum of Yonatan, however, encapsulates a different rabbinic tradition that associates this verse with Rosh Hashanah: \u201cBlow the horn in the month of Tishri, in the month in which the day of our festivals is concealed.\u201d As the Talmud explains: \u201cOn which holiday is the moon concealed? On Rosh Hashanah\u201d (Rosh Hashanah 8a-b).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are two modern translations; note their correspondence regarding the first half of the verse as opposed to their disagreement regarding its closing.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 408px;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JPS &#8211; Blow the horn (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shofar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) on the new moon (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ba-chodesh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), on the full moon (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ba-keseh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for our feast day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 340px;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Alter &#8211; Blast the ram\u2019s horn on the new moon, when the moon starts to wax, for our festival day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alter\u2019s rendition can be regarded as consistent with the Talmudic tradition since it treats <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ba-keseh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> implicitly as a form of concealment, since at the time that the moon \u201cstarts to wax\u201d it is otherwise hidden. He stated:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hebrew <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keseh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drives from the verb that means \u201cto cover.\u201d Although many interpreters understand it as a reference to the full moon [JPS], it is something of a stretch to imagine that the festive celebration of the new moon invoked in the first verset somehow goes on to a point in time fourteen days later in the second verset. In any case, \u201dcover\u201d accords far better with the time of the month when the moon is only a thin sliver than with the time when it is bright and full.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The JPS translation, however, seems to contradict that specific tradition while it remains consistent with that of Se`adyah since two of the three major pilgrimage festivals commence with the \u201cfull moon\u2014Pesach on the 15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Nisan and Sukkot on the 15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of
