Psalm 81:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nAsaf–a composer of several psalms and a patriarch of a family of singers in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple).<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nThis psalm was written by Asaf. It was read as the Song of the Day in the Musaf prayer on Rosh HaShanah in the Temple.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Wisdom–This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nAsaf here speaks about Rosh HaShanah and the traditional blowing of the Shofar on that day. He also celebrates the end of the Israelites\u2019 enslavement in Egypt, which, according to tradition, took place on Rosh HaShanah.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of seventeen verses, subdivided into two parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-6, the psalmist calls upon the people of Israel, encouraging them to sing aloud and make joyful noise for God; to play musical instruments and to blow the shofar, in accordance with God\u2019s command to Israel.
\nIn verses 7-17, God, as it were, rebukes Israel, reminding them of the deliverance from Egypt, and warns them not to worship idols. He further reminds them that they have not listened to his words and that He has therefore removed his providence from them. He concludes with a wish that Israel will once again hearken to God\u2019s voice and will subsequently merit salvation and blessing.<\/p>\n

\nShofar<\/em>–A Ram\u2019s Horn<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor protecting oneself from worshipping idols–Verse 10 states: \u201cLet no strange god be within you, nor bow before a foreign god.\u201d<\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:<\/em>
\nSelah<\/em>–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah” may mean \u201ceverlasting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biblical Personalities: <\/em>
\n\u05d9\u05e2\u05e7\u05d1–Yaakov–Jacob–also called Israel, the third patriarch, considered the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was the brother of Esav, and was married to Leah and Rachel.
\n\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05e1\u05e3–Josehp–Yehosef–the son of Jacob and the father of Ephraim and Menasheh. Joseph feared God\u2019s Name and refused to give in to the wiles of Potiphar\u2019s wife. Because of this, he merited that the letter \u05d4 from God\u2019s name be added to his name, making it Yehoseph.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 2: \u201cSing joyously to God, our strength, shout for joy to the God of Jacob.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Rosh HaShanah 30b, teaches that the Levi\u2019im (Levites) sang this psalm during the service of the Korban Musaf (additional sacrificial offering of Shabbat and Festivals) of Rosh HaShanah.
\nVerse 7: \u201cFrom the burden I removed his shoulder, his hands were removed from the cauldron.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Sukkot 55a, teaches that this psalm was sung in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple) on the sixth day of Chol HaMo\u2019eid Sukkot (Intermediate days of Sukkot).
\nVerse 10: \u201cLet no strange god be within you.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Shabbat 15b, offers a less literal, yet more profound interpretation of the phrase: You shall not have within you a strange god. This verse, then, is not warning us against worshipping external idols. Rather, it is referring to the yeitzer hara<\/em> (evil inclination), admonishing us to search for it within ourselves and to root it out. <\/p>\n
