Psalm 80:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nAsaf–a composer of several psalms and a patriarch of a family of singers in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple).<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Communal Lament–This psalm contains teaching and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nAsaf composed this psalm as a prayer for the redemption of the exiles. He reminds the Jewish people of their earlier glory and closeness to God, assuring them that they will one day be restored.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twenty verses, subdivided into three parts. The first verse serves as a heading. Verses 4, 8, and 20 are a refrain, each refrain builds upon the previous one by the addition of a description and appellation of God; verse 4 refers to \u201cElokim\u201d–\u201dGod\u201d, verse 8 to \u201cElokim Tzeva\u2019ot\u201d–\u201dGod of Hosts\u201d, and verse 20 to \u201cHashem Elokim Tzeva\u2019ot\u201d–\u201dAdonoy, God of Hosts\u201d.
\nIn verses 2 & 3, Asaf calls upon God to shine forth and bring deliverance.
\nIn verses 5-7, he laments: \u201cHow long?\u201d Just how long will God reject the prayers of His people and not answer them?
\nIn verses 9-19, the psalmist expresses his prayer through a simile in which Israel is compared to a vine, and God is compared to the one who plants and nurtures it. Asaf concludes his prayer by spelling out that the subject of the parable is man.<\/p>\n
