If we return, briefly, to <\/span>our introductory remarks <\/span><\/a>about the authorship of the Book of Psalms, we can readily see why this chapter would sway anyone to assign it to a post-Davidic, even post-exilic author.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Heathens have entered Your domain, defiled Your holy temple, and turned Jerusalem into ruins\u201d (1) and <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Their blood [of Your servants] was shed like water around Jerusalem, with none to bury them\u201d (3) ring truest with the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 586 BCE. And <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Help us, O God, our deliverer, for the sake of the glory of Your name\u201d (9) and \u201cLet the nations not say: \u201cWhere is their God?\u201d (10) sound like pleas for redemption from exile and deliverance from persecution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can these verses yet be consistent with King David\u2014in whose lifetime the Temple was still on the proverbial \u201cdrawing board\u201d? Ibn Ezra, referring to his own introduction to Psalms, cited two opinions here: \u201cSome say it is a book of lamentations, or it is something [David] saw by means of the Holy Spirit.\u201d The latter opinion is likely that of Se`adyah Gaon, the strongest advocate for exclusive Davidic authorship among the medieval exegetes, who wrote as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

This psalm is a forewarning of God\u2019s knowledge of the [future] destruction of the Temple, dispersion of the nation, and other troubles that befell us. He gave prior notice of these by giving it as a prophecy to His servant David.<\/span><\/p>\n

A difference of opinion of a lesser order of magnitude accompanied the interpretation of v.2: \u201cThey have left Your servants\u2019 corpses as food for the fowl of heaven, and the flesh of Your faithful for the wild beasts.\u201d If \u201cfaithful\u201d (<\/span>chasidekha<\/span><\/i>) implies righteousness, why would God\u2019s faithful servants be treated like the faithless? Conversely, if they, too, were defiled, surely they were not really faithful.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rashi explained: \u201cWere these not wicked [too]? Rather, once they received their comeuppance, they are as the faithful.\u201d Radak, at somewhat greater length, wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n

My late father wrote that there were among [the exiles] faithful servants of God such as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah… There may also have been others, but they hid in their homes and were unable to appear in public. Some of these faithful of Jerusalem were spared from death and went into exile, while others were not spared\u2014all according to divine
