Thus, Asaf here asks that He avenge the destruction as well as the extermination of his people.<\/p>\n<p><em>This psalm consists of thirteen verses, subdivided into two parts. <\/em><br \/>\nIn verses 1-4, the psalmist cries out against the terrible destruction that has visited his people.<br \/>\nIn verses 5-13, he prays for pardon of their sins, mercy, and salvation. He further beseeches God to take revenge against Israel\u2019s enemies. He ends with a vow and promise to relate the praises of God forever.<\/p>\n<p><em>Introductory Words:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Mizmor<\/em>&#8211;Musical Accompaniment<\/p>\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim&#8211;When to Say:<\/em><br \/>\nFor one\u2019s enemies to perish&#8211;Verse 12 states: \u201cAnd render our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom, their humiliation with which they thought to humiliate You, my Master.<\/p>\n<p><em>Biblical Personalities: <\/em><br \/>\n\u05d9\u05e2\u05e7\u05d1&#8211;Yaakov&#8211;Jacob&#8211;also called Israel, the third patriarch, considered the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was the brother of Esav, and was married to Leah and Rachel.<\/p>\n<p><em>Biblical Places:<\/em><br \/>\n\u05d4\u05d9\u05db\u05dc&#8211;<em>Heichal<\/em>&#8211;Holy Temple&#8211;a term used to refer to the inner sanctuary of the Temple in Jerusalem. The Heichal contained the Holy of Holies, the resting place of the Aron HaKodesh (Holy Ark)*. It also housed the Menorah, Altar of Incense, and the Table of the Showbread. <br \/>\n*The <em>Aron HaKodesh<\/em>, while present in the first Beit HaMikdash (Temple) was buried, and hence its location was not known, during the period of the second Beit HaMikdash.<br \/>\n\u05e6\u05d9\u05d5\u05df&#8211;<em>Zion<\/em>&#8211;a place name often used as a synonym for Jerusaelm. The term Zion originally referred only to the area where a Jebbusite fortress once stood, also the location of the City of David. Zion was later used by the prophets and psalmists as another name for Jerusalem.<br \/>\n\u05e2\u05e8\u05d9 \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d3\u05d4&#8211;<em>Arei Yehudah<\/em>&#8211;The Cities of Judah&#8211;located just to the west of the Jordan River, what is referred to today as the West Bank.<br \/>\n\u05d9\u05e8\u05d5\u05e9\u05dc\u05d9\u05dd&#8211;<em>Yerushalayim<\/em>&#8211;Jerusalem&#8211;the capital city of Israel, conquered by King David 3,000 years ago.
