He stresses David’s greatness and the excellence of the Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple) built by his son, King Solomon.

This psalm consists of seventy-two verses, subdivided into four parts.
In verses 1-8, the psalmist emphasizes the obligation to relate the wondrous deeds which God performed during the Exodus from Egypt. He does so not only to praise the Lord, but also to install the fear of God in this and future generations, so that they would not sin as did their forefathers.
In verses 9-39, he tells of the parting of the Red Sea and of the miracles performed in the desert, as well as the rebellion of that generation and their ensuing punishment. God was nonetheless compassionate, the author reminds us, and turned away his anger on numerous occasions.
In verses 40-55, he tells of the ten plagues in Egypt and the subsequent conquest of the Land of Israel. Again, he describes the rebellion of the generation.
In verses 56-72, Asaf further tells of the acts of salvation enjoyed by Israel before the selection of David as king. He continues to focus on sins committed, this time during the period of the Judges, the recent destruction of Shiloh, and continuing through the period of the anointing of David.

Technical Terminology:
Maskil–a discerning person, alternatively, a giver of instruction, perhaps denoting a translator of the chapter (Rashi).

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:
To find favor in the eyes of royal authority–Verse 55 states: “And He drove out the nations before them, and allotted them as the portions of inheritance..”

Biblical Personalities:
חם–Cham–One of the three sons of Noah, and as the Bible refers to him, the father of Mitzrayim (Egypt).
