In my time of distress, I turn to the Lord, with my hand [uplifted]; [my eyes] flow all night without respite; I will not be comforted\u201d (2-3). Ibn Ezra shared several sharp linguistic insights into these two verses.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI cry\u201d appears twice because it [indicates] ongoing [activity].<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat He may give ear\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ve-ha\u2019azin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Some say it should be [vocalized] <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ve-he\u2019ezin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [He gave ear] like <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he\u2019emin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [he believed], i.e. as a verb in the past tense. R. Moshe [Ibn Chiqatilla] said it is an imperative [give ear!] and I think it is an infinitive [to give ear].<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A great scholar wrote an important book beset with errors and said that \u201cmy hand\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yadi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) substitutes for \u201cmy eye.\u201d This is unlikely of a knowledgeable person even in casual conversation\u2014let alone in Holy Scripture.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though note Robert Alter\u2019s comment on this: \u201cThe Masoretic Text reads, incomprehensibly, \u201cmy hand [<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yadi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] flows.\u201d The emendation adopted here, from \u201chand\u201d to \u201ceye\u201d (<em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eyni<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is based not only on the verb used but also on a similar formulation in Lamentations 3:49: \u201cMy eye streams and is not still, without respite.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some say: \u201cMy hand\u201d signifies my strength and might, as though it melted until it flowed, as in \u201c[Samson\u2019s] shackles melted [off his hands]\u201d (Judges 15:14).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternately, the [prepositional prefix] <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is missing, as though it said \u201con [account of] my hand\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b\u2019yadi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) meaning my suffering and affliction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFlow all night\u201d [refers to] my cries, as it is preceded by \u201cI cry aloud\u201d even if the word \u201ccry\u201d is absent, as in \u201cWhen He blesses (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beireikh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), I cannot reverse it\u201d (Numbers 23:20) [which means] He offered a blessing [that I cannot reverse].<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[\u201cFlow\u201d] is metaphorical as in \u201cMy roaring pours forth as water\u201d (Job 3:24).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternately, \u201cMy hand\u201d is my place, as in \u201cYou shall have a place [<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yad<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] [to relieve yourself]\u201d (Deut. 23:13), meaning he will be swept from his place on account of his
