Psalm 77:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nAsaf–a composer of several psalms and a patriarch of a family of singers in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple).<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nDespite the decrees and edicts that would affect Israel in exile, Asaf does not come as one challenging and demanding of God, but rather speaks in the language of song and praise. He knows that Israel\u2019s sins are washed clean through harsh judgments.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twenty-one verses, subdivided into two sections. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-10, the psalmist laments his personal distress, and then extends his lament to the distress of the entire nation. He describes how he cries out to God and prays to Him. He further complains that God seems to have forgotten his people.
\nIn verses 11-21, he tells of God\u2019s wondrous deeds in days of old and asks that they be performed once again. He tells of how God redeemed Israel, and describes how the entire world trembled when God\u2019s glory was revealed during the period leading up to, and including the Exodus from Egypt.<\/p>\n

\nSelah<\/em>–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nRecited in some congregations on the Shabbat prior to the month of Nissan, in conjunction with Parashat HaChodesh<\/em>–a special Torah reading for the day.
\nRecited in some congregations on Chol HaMo\u2019ed<\/em> Sukkot (intermediate Days of Sukkot).
\nThe first three words of verse 4–\u201dEzkerah Elo-him ve\u2019ehemayah<\/em>\u201d–\u201dI shall remember God and stir\u201d open one of the stanzas of Ne\u2019ilah<\/em> (Closing Service) of Yom Kippur.
\nVerses 15 and 16 are found in the Selichot<\/em> (Penitential Service) of Ta\u2019anit Esther<\/em> (Fast of Esther).<\/p>\n
