A midrash declares that \u201cThere are seventy names for Jerusalem\u201d (B\u2019midbar Rabbah 14; it makes an identical claim for God, Israel, and the Torah), but it does not list them. Some, like Zion, are self-evident; others, like Salem, less so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abraham, on his triumphal return from his rescue mission for his nephew Lot, was met by Melchizedek, \u201cKing of Salem, who was a priest to the Highest God\u201d (Gen. 14:18). All the venerable Aramaic targums render Salem as Jerusalem, but more pertinent to our inquiry is the prooftext cited there by Ibn Ezra in agreement: \u201cSalem (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shalem<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) became His abode.\u201d This identification, which may appear fanciful at first blush, can be sustained by the observation that the battles that preceded Lot\u2019s capture took place in the vicinity of the five \u201ccities of the plains\u201d (Gen. 19:29) that were situated at or near the Dead Sea, in reasonably close geographical proximity to Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the meaning of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shalem<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ibn Ezra (here) offered three explanations:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was so called because it is directly <em>(<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sh\u2019lemah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) opposite the gateway to heaven. Or because it deserves to be at peace (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shalom<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Or it was so called by way of entreaty, as in \u201cSeek the peace of Jerusalem\u201d (Ps. 122:6).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Salem doing in our psalm, and, if it is Jerusalem, why the pseudonym? Malbim, who displays a penchant for distinguishing between otherwise similar words, has an explanation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tribe of Judah worshipped God who was known among them by His deeds. Israel, referring to the other ten tribes, among whom He was not so well-known, His name was nevertheless great. In Jerusalem, where the masses dwelt, the abode (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sukkah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of God was situated, an abode being a temporary dwelling. In Zion, where the king, Sanhedrin, and priests dwelt, He has a permanent residence (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ma`on<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the Holy
