Psalm 76:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nAsaf–a composer of several psalms and a patriarch of a family of singers in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple).<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Praise–This is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.
\nPsalm of Zion–This psalm glorifies God\u2019s city and His holy mount in which He has placed His abode.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary: <\/em>
\nHere too, Asaf speaks of the future redemption and God\u2019s vengeance against Israel\u2019s enemies. This psalm also alludes to the Mishkan (Tabernacle), here referred to as Sukkat David (the Sukkah of David). As such, it is recited in some communities on the holiday of Sukkot.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of thirteen verses, subdivided into three parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2 and 3, the psalmist proudly declares that the name of God has become known in Israel, and that his dwelling place is set in Zion.
\nIn verses 4-10, he further describes how God has imposed His fear upon His enemies and has delivered all humble inhabitants of the earth from the hands of their oppressors.
\nIn verses 11-13, he speaks of the people who subjugate themselves to God, fear Him, and express their devotion by making vows to Him.<\/p>\n

\nSelah<\/em>–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah” may mean \u201ceverlasting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehilim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor protection against fire and water: Verse 9 states: \u201cFrom heaven You caused sentence to be heard, the earth feared and was still.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nRecited on the first day of Sukkot in some congregations<\/p>\n

Biblical Places:<\/em>
\n\u05e9\u05dc\u05dd–Shalem<\/em>–another name for Jerusalem, dating back to the time of Abraham. The name Yerushalayim itself does not appear in the Chumash.
\n\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d3\u05d4–Yehudah<\/em>–Judah-one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The Davidic dynasty descended from this tribe.
\n\u05e6\u05d9\u05d5\u05df–Zion<\/em>–a place name often used as a synonym for Jerusaelm. The term Zion originally referred only to the area where a Jebbusite fortress once stood, also the location of the City of David. Zion was later used by the prophets and psalmists as another name for Jerusalem.
\n\u05e2\u05e8\u05d9 \u05d9\u05d4\u05d5\u05d3\u05d4–Arei Yehudah<\/em>–The Cities of Judah–located just to the west of the Jordan River, what is referred to today as the West Bank.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 9: \u201cFrom heaven You caused sentence to be heard, the earth feared and was still.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Shabbat 88a, explains that before the Jewish nation accepted the Torah and declared: \u201cWe will do and we will listen\u201d, the earth became afraid. Had they not accepted the Torah, the world would have been returned to a state of tohu vavohu<\/em>–astonishing emptiness. Once the nation indeed accepted it, the earth calmed down and became peaceful. <\/p>\n
