This psalm is a statement of reproach to the wicked ones who claim that God has abandoned the land to chance.<\/span><\/p>\n

We praise You, O God, and honor You as our King. To You only, since we recognize that our salvation comes from You, and that it does not come about by chance. For we know what it is that You do, and in saying it we oppose those who say that You are distant from the human race and that You have abandoned them to chance. For this is not so! We know that You are close to us and that You examine the ways of Man, giving every person his just deserts.<\/span><\/p>\n

And since this faith in God was so strong in the heart of the psalmist, he repeated it again, this time in the name of God, saying 3) that I will find the appropriate time to offer true justice 4) to dissolve the earth and all its inhabitants or to keep its pillars firm \u2013 each according to his activities. But the reward or punishment that they receive does not happen by accident.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the psalmist calmed down somewhat, he resumed speaking in his own voice 5-6) To wanton men I say, \u2018Do not be wanton!\u2019 etc. Do not continue with your usual comments, saying 7) \u201cJust as it is clear that no great mountains can be found to the east of Jerusalem, nor to its west or south, for in those three directions, only modest hills are found, and the great mountains \u2013 Lebanon, Hermon, Amana \u2013 are found only to the north of Jerusalem, so it is clear that there is no God who judges some to rise and some to fall. All of that is but happenstance, for it is hardly befitting for God to lower Himself from His high position to go down to examine the goings on of the lower world.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do not say this –
\n9) for the cup is only in the hands of God to give each and every one according to his just deserts. He pours the good wine for the righteous, but the dregs, He gives to the wicked to drink, because He pays attention to the actions of all men.
\n10) As for me, I will declare forever, I will sing a hymn to the God of Jacob for He is the One who commands all, and all come from Him \u2013 it is not by chance.<\/span><\/p>\n
