In the Masoretic vocalization, the last syllable of <em>mimidbar<\/em> shows a <em>pata\u1e25<\/em> as the vowel, which would join it to <em>harim<\/em> as the construct state, yielding \u201cfrom the desert of mountains.\u201d Many manuscripts, however, vocalize this syllable with a <em>qamats<\/em>, which would introduce a pause after <em>mimidbar<\/em> and thus make <em>harim<\/em> a verb in the infinitive, \u201cto lift up.\u201d This small change gives the sentence an otherwise absent predicate and accords with this poet\u2019s fondness for pointed repetition of terms.<\/p>\n<p>From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 3: Writings, W.
