  1. Al tash\u1e25eth<\/em>. This is the fourth and last psalm that opens with the words \u201cal tash\u1e25eth.\u201d It joins psalms 57, 58 and 59. In order to understand its meaning, we need to go back 480 chapters, to Deuteronomy, and to the prayer of Moses after the sin of the golden calf: \u201cI prayed to the LORD and said, \u201cO Lord God, do not annihilate (<\/span>al taschet<\/span><\/em>) Your very own people, whom You redeemed in Your majesty\u201d (Deut. 9:26). What\u2019s the connection to these psalms, in whose headings those words appear? Good question.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The bitter cup<\/em>. In verse 9 the wicked are given to drink from \u201ca cup in the LORD\u2019s hand\u201d (and perhaps also the righteous). The image of the trial and the punishment in the form of a cup from which God doles out to each according to what they deserve, we first met 217 chapters ago, in Jeremiah\u2019s prophecy (Jer. 25).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. A lexicon of alcohol. <\/span>Yayin chamar<\/span><\/em> (translated as \u201cfoaming wine\u201d) is high-quality red wine; <\/span>male mesech<\/span><\/em> (\u201cfully mixed\u201d), describes the rich sediment in it. <\/span>Vayager mizeh<\/span><\/em> (\u201crom this He pours\u201d), the excellent wine flows from the cup, and perhaps it is the righteous who enjoy it. The wicked get only the dregs (according to one interpretation).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Curious horns<\/em>. Horns are mentioned four times in the psalm. In verses 5, 6 and 11, the reference is to the horns of the wicked which the psalm calls to lower or remove, while the last one is the horn of the righteous, that \u201cshall be lifted up.\u201d What are all these horns?
