This section of Psalms is written by “Asaph”.\u00a0 We do not have an historical record of who this is, but we can try to deduce from the text of the Psalms when these were written. Recall, we had a similar question earlier on with the sons of Korach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Given the biblical twist of prophetic visions, it is always possible that certain psalms discuss events in the future.\u00a0 Looking at the text of chapter 74, we can see a few hints as to the time period of this author. Verse 7 discusses the burning of the Temple.\u00a0 This is a very specific image that is historically accurate. Prophecies of the future destruction may not have had such specificity. It’s therefore plausible that Asaph wrote this after the destruction of the Temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Which Temple though? Is this the first temple of Solomon or perhaps further in the future, the Second Temple?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Verse 9: “Our signs we have not seen there is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us that knows how long.” There are two facts noted here that are relevant. The first is a dearth of prophecy and the second is uncertain exile length. Both of these facts seem to point to the end of the Second Temple period.\u00a0 As we know, prophecy ended sometime in the beginning of the return of the Babylonian exiles. We also know that the length of this second exile is unknown. There were prophetic visions that the first exile would last 70 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea that texts from the destruction of the Second Temple period made its way into the Psalms is actually quite extraordinary considering that the Tanach was compiled during the start of the Second Temple period. Was it prophesy? Was it a late addition to the psalm?
